Marina Single Sailing Club

Minutes from

Board Meeting May 8, 2003

  1. Need to add an Addendum to extend the Reciprocal Agreement between California Single Sailors (CSS)and Marina Single Sailing Club (MSSC). It is agreed that the two clubs will start to do more activities together. Next MSSC newsletter will share calendars from both groups.
  2. CSS will share hosting of some events starting on May 26 with a dock party at Yvonne’s boat. Other activities to be planned by members from both clubs.
  3. It is very important for all officers should send their newsletter articles to SouthBendDounn@AOL.COM by the 17th of the month. Please note this is a new email address for the Editor.
  1. Who said they would line up brunches for the Sunday Sails? I think it was Jim, and we need to get on that starting this next Sunday Sail. Eunice Scott will be doing the brunch for June 8.
  2. Updated membership rosters should be sent out on a regular basis. How about with the newsletter? So much of the member info has changed, please make sure your info is up to date. For copies of a new roster or changes to your information, please contact Francine Murray at: francinem@prodigy.net
  3. Budget: It was a decision of the Board to allocate $35 for each Sunday Sail brunch. For each regular party (outside of the Christmas party or for special circumstances), the budget will be $100. With the Reciprocal Agreement with California Single Sailors, a Guest Fee will be charged to just cover any costs. (I have left this in from last month because some people asked what the budget is for the parties. We have been doing a good job on this and have kept to, plus or minus a few dollars, budget on all parties and brunches to date. With new dues coming in, it will be the job of the Treasurer to see that these allotments will still be appropriate.
  4. Parties: The Board is currently looking at Evites.com to use for sending invitations to members for our parties. This website has pre-programmed invitations that can be emailed to our list and then records all responses.
  5. Mentorship Program: The Board has endorsed this program and will assist in getting it rolling. Mentors will be introduced to new guests. During the sail, the Skipper becomes the mentor of the guest. Again the guest will meet up with their mentor at the wine and cheese party after a Sunday Sail, and will continue contact with them for invites to future sails and our parties. (Again, I am leaving this minute intact to remind everyone that we voted to have this program. We need to institute it on a more steady basis.)
  6. It was decided at the last Sunday Sail that our new webmaster will get his dues paid by the club in lieu of payment for his services. The webmaster has devoted much time to the design, setup and maintenance of the site. In addition, he filed for our domain name and arranged for the hosting of the site (on a server). He has been very diligent in adding any changes we have needed and is a pleasure to work with.
  7. The Calendar: The Board voted on extending the calendar to include many activities with CSS. A lot of time was spent on filling out the calendar for the rest of the year. The last of that activity will be the completion of the cruise schedule. Extensive conversations were held with Ben Kaplan, Fleet Captain, to work with the Skippers to finalize these cruises.
  8. Ben Kaplan has decided to have a very short Skipper’s Meeting at 10:45a.m. before every Sunday club sail. Any questions for Ben, please call: 310/396-8141.
  9. Safety & Education Sessions are building in attendance. As noted below, Jim has made out the schedule and topics for each month. Call Jim Provost for questions, topic, time and location at: 702/301-9439 or by email at: jspro@gbronline.com .

10. Club Parties –The first Joint Party with California Single Sailors will be May 26. The schedule is: Memorial Day--May 26, June 21, Independence Day--July 4, an Orphan’s Thanksgiving and a Christmas party.

11. Cruises –. The cruise calendar has been expanded:

May - Cinco de Mayo – Isthumus, Catalina, May 2,3,4. This would be Club sponsored. Jim has set the schedule. Club will provide wine, beer, soft drinks and charcoal. This will be a joint sail with California Single Sailors. Jim will write a murder mystery.

June - Need to vote on either June 14-15 (the 15th is Father’s Day) – Or June 28-29 -- cruise to Isthumus, Catalina. This would be Club sponsored. No decision yet.

July - On the 4th, Jim Provost and Lou Weiss are going to Glorietta Bay in San Diego for the fireworks and celebration. Not a Club sponsored cruise.

August – All Club Skippers agreed to a club sail the end of August. However, there is a conflict here. The only weekend open, following the Club By-law mentioned above, is August 16-17. This would be Club sponsored.

September It is recognized this is a great month to go to Catalina or the Channel Islands. Would it be possible to consider the Channel Islands over Labor Day Weekend because of the long weekend? Otherwise, the date for a club sail to Catalina would have to be on September 5-7. This would be Club sponsored.

October – 18-20--Avalon, Catalina for the Jazz Festival. This would be Club sponsored.

November – open

December – open

  1. The Treasurer, Francine Murray, gave a detailed report. The club is doing very well and has only spent about $400 since the beginning of the year which includes all parties, the website, the brunches, and the cruise to Catalina. Excellent work. Any member wishing to see the report, please contact Francine Murray at: francinem@prodigy.net
